Dear Darlings: Penpal Signups and More!

A few weeks ago, I put a little feeler out there to see if you guys were interested in doing a penpal project over here, and I'm calling it "Dear Darlings" (gotta give the blog a little shoutout!).  Today marks the first day of signups for this delightfully fun endeavor!  Please send me an email if you're interested in joining the project, and I'll give you all the details.  The basic lowdown is that I'll be creating penpal groups (about 5 people per group), and then you'll send letters to and receive letters from all of the people in that group.  The signups have "rolling admissions," so to speak, so the earlier you sign up, the faster you'll get your penpals, and there isn't any distinct deadline for signups.  Also, I'd like your opinion -- would you rather have free reign, and write about anything that strikes you, or would you prefer that I assign a topic/theme every few weeks?

There's more exciting letter-writing news!  Some new sponsors who will be joining us in the next few weeks will be: (a) hosting giveaways of beautiful stationery, which would be perfect to use for your penpals, (b) offering special discounts to you guys on the stationery, and (c) premiering their latest stationery lines right here at Oh, My Darling, for you to see it first!  How awesome is that?

Why am I arranging this little project?  Well, I love all things related to old-fashioned letter-writing -- finding beautiful stationery and cards to send, coming up with a fun little message to write to your recipient, and then seeing a pretty envelope in the mail in response, among all of the junk mail and bills that usually arrives in the mailbox.  And something tells me that you guys love it, too.

In fact, I love letters and cards so much that I keep a little shoebox filled with old notes that I've received over the years. My favorite letters that I have kept are the ones from my grandmother, who wrote to me faithfully until Alzheimer's took over her ability to know how to write.  Do you have any letters or cards that you especially treasure?

Also, upon searching through the box to take these photos, I noticed that my parents have given me the exact same valentine for three years in a row.  Hilarious.

Can't wait to hear from those of you who are interested in the "Dear Darlings" project, and get ready for a whole lotta stationery awesomeness over here, throughout the month of August!

  4. I would LOVE to have a penpal! It IS nice to get real mail, instead if just junk and bills!

(I think assigning topics is also a good idea because I often can't think of things to tell new people.)

  17. This sounds really cool! I wish I could join, but I don't have money for stamps. I used to write snail mail letters to a lot of people, and buy lots of pretty stationery and stickers for it as well.

  21. I would love to sign up for your letter writing campaign! I agree, there needs to be more of a shout out to the good ol' days of handwritten letters :)

Also, thanks so so much for your comment on my post! I am looking to stay in the charles village area, so if you know of anything in the region that is decently priced and will take doggies, let me know! I've been scoping out a few places, but they're all filled with college kids...I feel like such an old geiser, but I'm looking for a bit more of a quiet place :) Thank you, Melissa!

  28. This is a delightful project! Lately I've been all about snail mail--writing and sending lots of letters--I want to sign up, but I'm afraid of keeping up with five more penpals (on top of the people I already write) during the school year! I'm also excited about discovering new stationery, etc. As for your parents sending the same Valentine three times--hilarious! Are you going to tell them, or wait it out and see if you get a 4th? haha!
