A Few Recent Beauty Lessons

Okay ladies, I'm not one to post a lot of personal pictures on this blog, but I got a new 'do and am pretty excited about it!  I went to the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis, where you pay $15 for a haircut because it's done by a stylist-in-training.  I've done it three times now, and have always been pleased -- in my experience, the trainees are hyper-focused on doing a nice job (I think they get graded on the final product), plus they use the delightful-smelling Aveda products and all that jazz.

Right now, I'm growing out my bangs and they're kinda at that awkward "bobby pins necessary" stage, and my stylist did a solid job of working with that sort of a mess.  She also told me that using cheap drugstore shampoo is as bad as washing your hair with laundry detergent -- does anyone else have insight on this?  I couldn't tell if she was just trying to sell me on some fancy Aveda products, or if that's legit haircare truth.

In other news, the red lipstick I'm wearing in this picture is a new and exciting discovery.  I've been searching for the perfect bright-red lipstick for quite awhile, but always seem to end up with the vaguely clownish look.  But, this past weekend, I discovered the Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red and my lipstick world has been changed.  Apparently, the trick to finding the perfect red was to get a matte lipstick, rather than a more garish shiny one!  Looks like it's (finally) time to rock the red lipstick!

What beauty lessons have you learned recently?  I feel like I've been on a wave of 'em lately, and would love to hear more!

  2. I learned recently that for removing the eye make up you should remove it from the outside of the face to the inside :P

  3. Cute new 'do!

On one hand, I think she may have just been trying to sell you the fancy brand, but I do have to say that I think that the Sexy Hair's Healthy Sexy Hair Reinvent line is kind of amazing if you color your hair. I'm not sure if I'd splurge on it if my cousins didn't own a salon and sell it to me at a discount, but it smells fabulous (it's got a grapefruit-y sort of scent) and it makes my hair super soft. :-)

  4. Nice new do! There is an Aveda Institute very close to my apt. where I had my hair blown out there years ago. I should look into going back.

  5. Speaking as a one-time beauty school student, I can attest to the fact that you are taught to say dramatic, exaggerated things about haircare, such as 'washing your hair with drugstore shampoo is like washing your hair with laundry detergent.' That said, my hair just feels better when I buy salon quality products. Plus, I like to feel fancy.

    Your hair looks super cute!
