I Want Candy

You guys, I brought life to the phrase "like a kid in a candy shop" this weekend.  There's this really adorable candy shop called Grandpa Joe's in the Strip District in Pittsburgh (a delightful part of town for foodies to explore -- there are food markets and restaurants galore).  There were all sorts of great candy finds available, including the delightful deal of $5 for as much candy as you could fit into a decent-sized box.

Upon finding this smile-inducing gem of a store, I also discovered that my boyfriend (who was born and raised outside of the states) had missed out on all sorts of American candies!  You guys, he's never had a Tootsie Roll!  Or a Hot Tamale!  I took it upon myself to be his US Candy Guide, and filled our box o' candy accordingly.

The shop owner at Grandpa Joe's was also super-nice (and he completely appreciated my youthful enthusiasm for all the candies).  Apparently there is a candy convention (in Chicago, I think), where new candy vendors give out samples to candy shop owners.  Last year, he got so much candy that he needed to buy a new suitcase to bring it all home!

What has made you act like a kid in a (literal or figurative) candy store lately?

  1. ummmm yum! I love my friends who aren't from the states and haven't seen or eaten some of the foods we all have grown up with!

The other day I was in Spokane Washington, and having gone there a lot as a child, I was walking through a familiar park when I found this carousel that my mom would take me on when I was little. I practically sprinted over to it (only to find it was closed)! But I did get to peer inside the windows and think about all those awesome childhood memories!

  5. Such a good place for candy! Then again, the Strip District has tons of awesome things hidden within. It's been a while since I've been there, but the prospect of a suitcase full of candy is really tempting :)

  9. I would like to pose as a candy store owner and attend that convention. ;-)

Oh, and fun fact: Hot Tamales are manufactured about two towns over from me! Toward the end of this past year, I audited a district judge that was only a couple of buildings away from the Just Born factory, talk about temptation! :-)
