On Nostalgia Music

What band totally changed your perspective on music (and maybe more)?  For me, it was The Strokes, sometime in early high school.  I vividly remember listening to Is This It? on repeat with my boom box, writing in my journal about how their music changed my life.  Ah, the melodrama of adolescence.

Anyway, The Strokes acted as my first introduction to indie rock music, a genre which has since influenced many aspects of my way of being, from the friendships I've made to the literature I read.  Even though I'm not a particularly fervent fan of The Strokes anymore, I still smile and think back to those teenaged memories whenever I hear a song of theirs, old or new.  This particular piece, Undercover of Darkness, came on The Current during my commute the other day and set the stage for a delightful few moments.

  3. Referring to the strokes as nostalgic makes me feel ANCIENT! I do love them though, so many good teen memories.

  4. ohhh teenage memories- they make me both cringe and smile at the same time haha. for me it was The Black Keys; I don't think that the music changed me *too* drastically, but around the time I started listening to it I started becoming more myself :)

  5. Hi! That's such a tough question. I actually didn't buy any music on my own until college, so my music taste was pretty much the same as my father's (bizarre, but true). I liked (still do) a lot of folk music - Judy Collins and Bob Dylan. On a related note, I first heard/liked the Strokes in college, but the guitarist went to Lab (my middle school and h.s.). I didn't know him b/c he's older than us.

  6. Nick Valensi is the Labbie. We would have overlapped when I was in m.s. and he was in h.s., but I had/have no clue who he is/was...I just remember when I was in h.s., people said an alum was in a famous band.
