The Dress That Got Away
While browsing the racks of vintage and consignment dresses at Avalon Exchange in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill, I happened upon this beautiful mint green dress with pretty (and quite intact) lace sleeves/neckline. But then, I tried it on and the flaws kept emerging. First, one side of the inner slip was completely torn. Then, the outer chiffon had a few little tears in it. Plus, it fit like a giant tent and was not flattering in any way possible. Major bummer, right?
But there's still something about this dress, despite its many, um, "bits of character," that I am just so in love with. I think it's the colors combined with the beautiful, unique lace portion. The vintage beauty was unfortunately not salvageable for the price, but now I'm determined to find a similar option that is in better condition and fits well. Perhaps this is a sign that it's time to start learning how to sew? I feel like something like this must be relatively easy to create -- what do the seamstresses among us think?
What's the dress that got away for you?

Ooh, I LOVE the color - I have a thing for mint greens!
ReplyDeleteI've never had a dress that got away; but I had a Rebecca Minkoff bag get away from me two years ago - I still think about it sometimes! :/
i love it! that color is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThat minty color is so pretty, but it sounds like it would've been a lot of work to fix up!
ReplyDeleteit is so pretty. i wish i had the skills to fix!
ReplyDeleteI left a beautiful bias-cut dress print with a Monet-inspired waterlilies motif in a shop–in the eight grade! My mama and I still talk about it as the one that got away, and it changed our attitude towards shopping altogether!
ReplyDeleteThat is a pretty dress! It's tough that you missed out on the dress but it's tough to get a dress that has flaws and then let it sit around and you wish you hadn't spent the money on it.
ReplyDeleteaww that is really cute :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's gorgeous and I know nothing about sewing... but I would start hunting mint green vintage dresses on Etsy. ;)
