A Night at the (Movie) Theater

Sometimes, I completely adore taking myself out on a date for one to an old-timey, independent movie theater.  These sorts of theaters tend to be charming and calm, with lovely and retro interiors and a quiet crowd who genuinely loves movies.  I recently experienced the delight of St. Anthony Main theater, while seeing Silver Linings Playbook.  What did you think of this movie?  I definitely enjoyed it overall, but was bothered by a few holes/inconsistencies in the plot.

I can also speak highly of the small-theater experience at The Manor Theater in Pittsburgh and The Charles Theater in Baltimore (where my love of independent movies really started and grew).  Do you have a favorite place to go for a bit of magic in your movie-watching experience?  I'd love to hear all about it!

P.S.  For all my fellow procrastinators out there -- don't forget that today is the last day to enter the Kate Spade giveaway!

  2. Older theaters are so much more quaint and charming than the mega multiplexes that are everywhere now. Luckily, I've got a couple small ones I go to in Brooklyn, one for mainstream movies and another for the indie stuff. The old school decor is such a blast from the past!

  6. Oh, the Charles! I loved that place, and getting tapas or a crepe after the movie! I never thought I'd miss Baltimore...but I do!

  7. The Charles had such a good selection! And great eateries in close proximity (the crepe place, tapas restaurant...). I like the Sunshine theater on Houston street. I have fond memories of the Angelika in Soho b/c it's been around since I was a child and they have also have a good selection, but at the same time it's so small as to be uncomfortable and it's a little pretentious. I saw SIlver Linings Playbook there and I thought the movie was really cute and the acting was excellent!

  8. I love independent cinemas. They are always charming and play other movies you may not see at the normal cinemas. I still want to see Silver Linings Playbook. x

  10. I seldom go to the cinema any more (I'm cheap) but I used to go in long breaks between classes in university, and then again last year when I lived right down the street from the English language cinema. It IS nice to huddle into a chair by yourself and become immersed in another world for a while.
